1981 GERMAN VON STEUBEN DAY PARADE CHICAGO

The Von Steuben Day Parade honors the traditions and contributions of German-Americans and is held in mid-September throughout the United States. Prussian-born Baron Friedrich von Steuben fought with George Washington and helped gain independence for the USA. In the parade you will see a myriad of traditional clothing that includes lederhosen, dirndl folk costumes, Prinzenpaar that celebrates Karneval, Tyrolean and more. The parade starts on Wacker Drive and processed down Dearborn Street with Marina Towers in the background. Long gone is Mayor's Row and all of the buildings on that square block now know as Block 37. The Berlin Wall did not come down until 1989 as evidenced by the Berlin Wall float in Roll 2_41A & 42A. Mayor Jane Byrne and dignitaries stood on the reviewing in Roll 2_37A. In Roll 4_31 you can see that the bridge is up allowing boats to travel up and down the Chicago River. One of my favorites is the bass player in full marching band regalia with a large bass amp being pushed behind him in Roll 3_24A & 25A. So many more to describe, please discover for yourself!
