In the good old days of the 'Daley Chicago Machine', the St. Patrick's Day Parade was celebrated on the feast day of St. Patrick. The dear and beloved saint was revered by Catholic and Orthodox faiths (he was a saint for all faiths until the schism) for converting Ireland and driving the snakes out of Ireland. The parade is a kitchy celebration of dyeing the Chicago River green, wearing green, displaying shamrocks, marching bagpipe bands, drinking beer and the display of Bridgeport pride in the form of city patronage jobs. No one was more powerful than Richard J. Daley
aka, "The Boss", who elected presidents, built the city of Big Shoulders and a dynasty with his sons who became Mayor Richard M. Daley
, Cook County Board Commissioner, John P. Daley
and William M. Daley
who became Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton and Chief of Staff under Barack Obama. This is the tip of the iceberg in terms of the Daley Family influence on Chicago's political sphere and the national political scene.
