NHM, NATIONAL HELLENIC MUSEUM SPORTS EXHIBIT 06-23-94
The National Hellenic Museum celebrated Greek athletes of all ages at the Hellenic Athletic Exhibit on June 23, 1994 that featured sports equipment, memorabilia, ephemera and sports figures past and present. The negatives laid dormant in my file cabinet until 2025 when they were scanned for the archives of the National Hellenic Museum in the digital age.
In frame #01 has Alec Ginares flanked by two sports figures, followed by Billy Hunker, Beth and Nick Melas in #02-05. Founder Jim Mezilson can be seen in #24 & 25 with a sports figure on the left, newscaster Lou Canellis giving remarks in #56 & 79 who is also an owner in the Avli Restaurants, Jim Mezilson giving remarks in #43-52 as is Theodora Vasils who was also an early founder of the museum in #54-55. Another early adopter of the museum was Andrew Athens and his wife Louise in #38-39. In #63-65 are Constantine Zografopoulos, Jim Mezilson and Alex Ginaras who is the son of Alec Ginaras. In #69-70 are Angie Stavrianos Cantania, Alec and Alex Ginaras and Jim Mezilson.
It is especially wonderful to see Tony, Georgia, Ari and Alexandrea Loukas. The Loukas brothers, Angelo, Tony and George are known as not only college football stars but they also played in the NFL and have become remarkably successful in the business world. Their ever expanding families along with sisters Diane and Stella (my bestie) have contributed much in the world of business, medicine and sports (George’s daughter Christina is an Olympian diver who competed in the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008). The real work begins in identifying everyone in these photos. If you recognize anyone, please contact me and I will add their names to the photos. Thank you!
