CORFU GR, EFFIE'S FAMILY 1977_09A
The world was wide open while backpacking through Italy, Greece and Egypt in the summer of 1977. Two single Greek-American women met adventure at every turn. A ferry ride to Corfu from Brindisi, Italy yielded a surprise invitation to stay at the home of our host Effie and her family on the west coast of Corfu. It was an idyllic experience where we lived a villagers life for a few days seeing how food was grown and how the fish landed on our table. The generosity of Effie's family was the definition of "philoxenia", which is the love of strangers. In our case it was taking us into their humble home, feeding us and giving us a place to lay our heads. We slept on a dirt floor in a outer building on our sleeping bags and it was a eye opener for these Chicago city slickers. The adventure continues in Poulithra, Greece. Stay tuned!
