The Asian Festival in the Albany Park neighborhood took place on June 14th, 1981 on Lawrence Avenue between Kedzie and Kimball. The festival was filled with Asian food, activities, demonstrations, vendors and was free to the public. The City of Chicago conducted many ethnic festivals throughout neighborhoods, at the Richard J. Daley Center as well as parades that took place on Dearborn, State Street, and Michigan Avenue. Accompanying these photos are newspaper clippings and City of Chicago guide to festivals during the tenure of Mayor Jayne Byrne. That summer I documented 18 ethnic festivals and parades that are currently on exhibit in Gather Together: Street Photography by Diane Alexander White at the National Hellenic Museum. Do you see a familiar face in the crowd? If so, please contact Diane Alexander White with your descriptions. Thank you!
