1977 DIANE IN GREECE & EGYPT MARGO SLIDE FILM
What can be more beautiful than a summer in Crete, Greece in 1977 when you are a recent college graduate at 22 years old? When bff Margo and I took off from Chicago in early June, we landed in Rome and after a few days of hitting the almost empty tourist spots left for Brindisi where we sailed across to Kekyra aka as Corfu. We continued onto to the upper Greece, the islands, Athens, the Peloponnese and finally to Crete where we visited more antiquities as seen in other albums on this website in 1977. Knossos was a dream come true especially after studying ancient Greece and Egypt in college. The first photos are in Phaestos where I sat comfortably in a rock hewn vessel or seat. Next is the cutest little Cretan man who sold all manners of nuts, snacks and traditional pipes for playing music. The camera slung around my body is the one that captured all of the photos on this trip and throughout Chicago as a street photographer. By the time that the trip ended in August, the camera was held together with a couple of rubber bands that did the trick. The next few photos are in the caves of Matala and the water overlooking the island of Paximadia. We continue onto the ferry that guided us to Alexandria, Egypt where we took a jitney cab to Cairo. Two Greek American gals were on their own on a wild adventure at the Giza Pyriamids, Saqqaura, Memphis and more. The famed Khan el-Khalili market was filled with spices, caftans woven from Egyptian cotton, jewelry, copperware, fragrant oils and so much more. You gotta see it to believe it and that is why we even broached the idea of this magnificent trip so many years ago. At the time that I am reflecting back on this trip, it is June 11, 2025.
