UIC STUDIO CLASS BALTHASAR BURKHARD & LYNN 1976_01
We are nearing the end of 2025 which makes these photos 50 years old when they were photographed in 1976. My father said, "have you taken studio photography classes"? I was not excited about the idea of lighting and large format photography, but I knew that he was right and in his assumptions. The class was taught by a renowned Swiss photographer by the name of Balthazar Burkhard. Even though it was a studio class, I never took out the large format cameras and worked with my 35 mm camera that my father had given me when I graduated from high school that followed me through my street photography from 1972 until I got a DSLR in the early 1980. In the first frames is a young woman who posed for me in the pit at in the Art & Architecture Building at UIC. I especially like #18-19 where her glasses are magnified through the background and her in eyes. We continue with photos of Balthazar Burkhard with a student by the name of Lynn who were willing to pose for me. The ever-present cigarette was in Balthazar's hand and Lynn wore a bow tie over a gingham shirt giant platform gym shoes with big curly hair that is similar to mine. She reminded me of a silent movie star with her diminutive features and cute smile. Balthazar wore a black leather jacket, and jeans while incessantly smoking a cigarette as the ash grew longer. I consider these photos a prize because he was and still is revered in the field of large format photography. The remainder of the photos are of Sam Hong who I'm still good friends with, Lynn and the gal with the large aviator frames in the early part of this roll of black and white film. I considered these photos to be good work but didn't realize it until they were scanned 50 years later. They still tell me that photography is an art that drives technology and both must work together hand in glove. Let me finish with the fact that all of the black and white film photography was processed by me in the darkroom and that many of the vintage prints are still with me today. Not dead yet!
