CORFU 1977 COLOR FILM_17A
We boarded the ferry in Brindisi, Italy for an overnight trip to Corfu where we slept peacefully in sleeping bags on the steel deck of the boat until the sun woke us up. The cafeteria below deck was bustling with travelers slurping espresso for a quick pick me up as the ferry made its way to the dock. A woman named Effie had offered us a place to stay in her village on the west side of the island and after a 2 hour taxi cab ride we reached our destination. The house had a commanding view of the Ionian Sea where fisherman lowered their nets for a plethora of fish and sea life. It was my first time eating skate ray that was pan fried over a wood fire with olive oil, lemon and oregano which are the three essentials for any Greek meal. The fishermen can be seen in Frame #0, 0A & 1A with their boats after the catch of the day. In Frame #2A & 3A a widowed woman wearing black is crocheting a doily. Frame #4A is a capture of a Mother’s expression after hearing what her daughter is whispering. What is the other daughter thinking? The next few frames are street life in the street café where the men gossip, play tavli (backgammon) and drink Greek coffee in demitasse cups. Make sure you let the grounds settle before sipping as your stomach will thank you. The Vlacherna Monastery in Frame # 15A is one of the most famous sights of Corfu with the Pontikonisi Island in the background. In Frames #16A through #23 is the Mesolonghi Hotel which looks nothing like it did in 1977. It now is an all inclusive resort with multi-story hotels. While touring the island on mopeds we came upon scarecrows holding hands. How could I resist a photo of Margo with the scarecrows and their human family? The final photos are of shop keepers, the Old Fortress of Corfu and the stern ramp of the ferry as we made our way to Igoumenitsa and onward to Kalambaka/ Meteora.
