ALVIS ON BIKE, 1975_31
What could be cooler than a kid on a BMX bike in the mid-1970s? Every kid's dream was a bike with ape hanger handle bars, a banana seat and training wheels? This little guy's name is Alvis and he was my neighbor who was a ready subject for my camera while I was in college taking photography and design at the University of Illinois, Chicago. This is the backyard of the first three flat that we moved into after living on the south side of the city for 75 plus years. It was a cold day which is why Alvis is wearing a fake fur coat but nevertheless looking to get out and learn how to ride a bike before summer arrived. What is interesting looking back some 40 plus years is that my process is the same. I look for an interesting photo subject and then shoot it from different angles and try get different facial expressions if possible. What I enjoy looking at this photo is the backdrop of an old garage, porches and grimy sidewalk. By looking at this photo series you know you are not in the suburbs but in the gritty city. This is the same child who posed with my pot plant, always ready to oblige and for that I'll be eternally grateful.
