MARGO PECOULAS, PAUL THOMOPOULOS ATHENS COLOR SLIDE, GR 1977_32
We were slightly shell shocked after the idyllic travels throughout the rugged Greek coastlines and islands before visiting the hustle and bustle of Athens. Margo stayed with our friend Paul #30 and I decamped with Aunt Dorothy, my Mom's sister in #28. Frame #31 shows a the rear view of an apartment building, while #33 is a view from the Athens Hilton of the Parthenon. Lycabettus can be seen in #35 at a height of 277 meters is the highest point in the center of Athens. Worth the climb to the top where you can venerate the icons in St. George's and dine in one of the best views anywhere in the world. Paul and Margo are at a περίπτερο also known as a new stand in #32 where you can make a phone call, buy a cold soda, magazine, candy, komboloi and more. During the afternoon siesta where all businesses are closed the περίπτερο is a life saver and open for those who need an aspirin and other essentials. We moved onto the beautiful island of Skopelos which is between Skiathos and Alonissos in the Sporades. Quiet, rugged and natural beauty awaits the curious traveler whether walking, hiking, swimming or hitchhiking. If you are a fan of "Mama Mia" there is a chance that you will recognize the locations film in Skopelos. In #01 you will see the overhang of pine trees where we dined at a restaurant called The Pefko which means pine tree. The tree sits in the middle of the outdoor restaurant and covers a 20' wide area with a beautiful pine canopy. Frame #20 was outside of the room to let at Kyria (Mrs)Despina Maria where we rested comfortably in a room filled with antique furniture and a view of the harbor in #12-19. Every morning our hostess brought us fresh water and apricots for breakfast. In #21 Margo is wearing a gardenia that Despina Maria gave us as we left the pensione. We hugged and kissed her while she cried a few tears for her two Greek-American visitors as they left for more adventures in Greece and Egypt. The remaining frames are of the boat leaving the harbor upon our departure. Next stop are my father's villages of Poulithra, Peleta and Kounoupia with Thea Chrysoula and family.
